Decor Arts Now

After yesterday’s round-up, are you jonesing to incorporate a giant map in your decor, but are worried that the look has been done?

Well worry no longer.  There is  a new kid in town offering fresh imagery.  I love it when someone follows their passion regarding art, and that is exactly what has happened at Bedrock Images.

Two Phd students Seth Rosenbaum (English Lit) and Alex Tolelando (French History) took a sidetrack from their studies to found Bedrock Images.  Bedrock offers luxury prints–both small and massive-of the most beautiful historic images of cities, such as bird’s eye views, panoramas and maps.

Bedrock has carefully restored works that have never been offered to the public before by removing blemishes and seams and restoring color– so that the images could be seen as originally intended.

In an email to me in early March, shortly after the company launched, Alex explained that the duo is most excited about its wall-sized cloth prints, mounted using wooden frames.  As shown here yesterday, wall sized maps can totally transform a room.

Bedrock Images also offers two types of paper prints.  One is akin to a 19th century daguerreotype with a glossy finish, and the other is printed on cotton rag paper.  You also can order detail sections of the maps.

Even more exciting is the fact that the company can do custom imagery.  Seth and Alex have developed many contacts in museums, libraries and other archives while working on their dissertations. They can source just about any image that you can come up with to complete a space.

Sometimes a trend simply won’t give up!

That’s because it just works.  We have seen interiors splashed by giant maps on the wall or dotted with a collection of globes for some time now.  Yet designers are still talking about the look.

I participated in an interior design tweet chat (#intdesignchat, usually on Tuesdays at 6:00), and several contributors (including me) got sidetracked discussing our fetish for maps and globes.

Including a map or globe in your interior somehow satisfies your inner wanderlust even if you haven’t traveled in quite some time.  And I for one, can’t resist the graphic pull.

So you can imagine my delight when an email about a new source for large scale (dare we say–massive) maps landed in my inbox.  The time now seems ripe for a round up of inspirational images featuring maps and globes.

Today will be devoted to eye candy, and later this week, I will reveal my new source for maps, many of which have a whole new twist.
