Antiquing in Vermont: Hit Hard by the Economy
By Lynn Byrne. I thought I would be sharing a great post with you, all about the wonderful antiques I saw last week while the boys and men in my family skied and snowboarded in the Stowe/Smugglers’ Notch area of Vermont. I was so looking forward to combing my favorite haunts for treasure. Not so. We didn’t get up to Vermont last winter. When we returned this year, I found things much changed.
My first disappointment was in Stowe. I planned to visit Rosebud Antiques on the Mountain Road. Rosebud was immortalized in the iconic Absolut Vodka ad series, but even so, it didn’t survive the downturn in the economy. It has been replaced by a women’s clothing store. Photo via San blog.
Around the mountain, in the Smugglers’ Notch area, I found two more of my favorite shops shuttered, and another a mere shell of its former self. The antique store, By Vermont Hands, which I remember as being beautifully curated was dusty and dark, with several sections closed off. The sales person told me that the antiques market was only 1/3 of what it was 2 years ago.
Still, there were a few bright spots. Smugglers’ Notch Antiques (and custom furniture), continues to offer beautiful reproductions and some nice older pieces.
Hard to believe that this hunt board is new, isn’t it?
I think they had the bargain of the week with this Thonet bench at $850. Look at those curves. And the cane seat was fairly tight. I wish I had somewhere to put it but I left it for the next hunter.
Larry is crazy for standiing shopkeepers’ desks. The Smuggler had one in butternut, but again, we did not have a place for it, so I made him leave without it.
With all of the closings, I was relieved to find Buggyman Antiques still open. The Buggyman has been around for more than 30 years and he has been threatening to retire for the past few years.
Happily, he is still going strong with lots of new stock. This tiger maple highboy is a contender for our upstairs hall. We want to check out a favorite shop in the Hamptons before we make our final decision.
If we do get it, I am going to negotiate for him to throw in this little sprite to place in my yard. I adore garden ornaments.
I went home with very little this year. I nabbed this instant bottle collection as a cute way to hold supermarket blooms.
I also got this pitcher to use as a vase for an upcoming photo shoot.
Stay tuned to see it in use.
Finally, I scooped up this lovely hand painted tile for my “gallery” wall.
I hope my that by my next visit to Vermont, the market rebounds a bit.
