It’s All In the (Roman) Details

This trip to Rome was not about sightseeing–we have been there before.  Our purpose this time was to celebrate with Cardinal Dolan and celebrate we did!

Stillfinding “Art in the Everyday” is pretty darn easy when in Rome. There is beauty everywhere you turn and my camera was always in my hand.

I love the top photo of Castel Sant’Angelo, but it is the reflection on the Tiber that really grabs me.

Here are some other beautiful details of life in Rome.

1. I swoon over the architecture.

Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls

I want to live in the room inside this window.

 2.   And then there is the sculpture.

3. No stay in Rome is complete without glorious food and lots of it!

We had lunch here and I could happily do that every day.

A favorite dish this time was zucchini flowers stuffed with ricotta and anchovy, lightly fried.

When we strolled through the Campo de Fiori, witty Chris quipped that it was the Fairway (a large supermarket chain in our area) of Rome.

It was fun to pick a seafood course out of this case.

Did I mention the gelato? How much can one skinny girl eat?  You would be amazed.  Just looking at the pictures makes my mouth water. Ice cream is a major food group for me.

4.  And, well um, Art.  It truly is everywhere–none of these photos were shot in a museum or church.

On a street corner in Trastevere.

Our hotel lobby has a Titan. Only in Rome.

More of the giant Titan in our hotel.

4. As for the Consistory (the official name for the ceremony), it was crowd crushing, but we still managed a some precious moments.  Again, the details.

This was the cool venue for a private reception we attended for the Cardinal.  Check out that ceiling.

A few nice minutes with Cardinal Dolan

The church, the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls,  where the Cardinal said his final mass for the Consistory pilgrims (ya, that is what we were called), is stunning.  We had great seats for this one.

A mother’s favorite precious detail? I am SO PROUD of my twins Peter and Chris.  No awkward teenagers here.  Gracious is the word that comes to mind.

Chris is, however, getting plenty of ribbing regarding a future vocation.  Cardinal Dolan chose to place his hat on him, after all.

Except for the pictures with family members, all photos by me.

ADD TO FAVORITES: Ercole Home (I Am Ahead of the Curve)

I am thrilled for Ercole Home, makers of the sideboard, lamp and vase shown above.  They were selected “Best of the Best” in innovative design at the January 2012 New York International Gift Fair by the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID).

I knew they were great early last year when I chose their nightstand for my master bedroom in Montauk.   It doesn’t do the nightstand justice, but there it is on my mood board for the space.  The big reveal  of the finished room  to come after I have the wonderful Ellen McDermott photograph it this spring.

Congratulations Ercole!

Except for my mood board, photos from the Ercole website.
