How I Style Bookshelves
By Lynn Byrne. A few weeks ago, I got this great French bookcase and some of you asked how I was going to style it.
Typically, I think a lot about color when I put bookshelves together, both for the books themselves and the accessories.
For example, I really like this next bookcase spotted on Vintage luxe. Careful thought went into sprinkling the red books as accents throughout the shelves.
Another way to get a cohesive look is to group books by color just as Kyle of Knight Moves blog has done.
Some people cover their books to create impact, often with white paper and sometimes with a color. These vignettes are by Tobi Fairley from her website. I haven’t done this one yet because I am such a book lover that I find it hard to cover them. Never say never however.
When you don’t have a lot of books to cram in, one of the best ways to create a look is to stick to one or two colors with the accessories. Check out these shelves from I Suwanee blog.
For my new bookcase, I only had a few books that didn’t fit on our many, many built-in bookshelves, so I grouped those by color and made sure the other ones didn’t clash. When it came to accessories, I simply looked around the house to see what I had. It quickly became apparent that my “lying around stuff” was mainly white, with some white and black. Here is my pile.
I ended up with this. Yes, I know the bookcase is near empty. It was a practical purchase. I keep buying design books with no where to put them. We needed room for our library to grow. I suppose when this bookcase is “done,” I will need a new one.
BTW, don’t you think the little teapot with the bird on top is cute? Scooped it up at HomeGoods for $12.00.
Fresh brewed tea and perusing a design book. Sounds like the perfect afternoon to me. And now I have everything I need right at my fingertips, with room to accommodate Christmas presents!
