Emerging Artists at New York’s Newest Gallery

By Lynn Byrne. Recently I attended the inaugural exhibition entitled “Colored Glasses” at New York’s newest international art gallery, Da Gallery, located in Chelsea at 149 West 24th Street on the 6th floor.

The exhibition features bright, mutli-colored artwork in a variety of mediums, including drawing, painting, photography and multimedia.  When I was there, a number of artists were on hand to discuss their work.  Here are some of the highlights.

Artist Jeremiah Teipen creates art on an HD video screen and player in a custom acrylic enclosure.  Jeremiah said that he was trying to convey the overwhelming sense of information that we are bombarded with daily.

His work is cool.  The video screen played a kaleidoscope of images that Jeremiah collected from sources such as Google.  It was quite beautiful.  If you click here and manipulate your mouse or track pad you can get a sense of the changing screen.

Here are two still photos of the ever changing video screen that I took.  Although they don’t really do the work justice, the shots manage to give you a small idea of the piece.  What a neat solution his work would be for a TV out in the open.  The piece was priced at $5000.  Enjoy the photos below but also please check out the link above.  It is the constant change of imagery that is so interesting.

I also quite liked this painting from Diane Carr and it is not just because we are both from Pittsburgh!  Diane said her work was inspired by nature and that she liked to experiment with different colors and shapes as an abstraction of nature.  I love color and that is what drew me to her work.  This piece is an oil on canvas and is entitled “Branches”.  With dimensions of 16″ x 20″, it is sized to fit almost anywhere.  Price is $2000.  Click on her name above to see more.

Artist, Brad Darcy, told us he started out as a sculptor but switched to painting.  You can see that in his work, because, in addition to the vibrant color, he has built up the paint to make a real statement about texture.  Here he used resin and acrylic paint.  I googled him but did not find a website.  I am sure you can contact Da Gallery if you are interested in learning more about his work.  This piece is sized at 30″ x 40″ x 1.5″ and is priced at $5,000.

One artist whose work I admired was not at the gallery during my visit.  I wish she was.  I quite liked this drawing and collage by Andrea Loefke.  The different mediums intrigued me.  When I googled her, I discovered her website and I learned that she also does sculpture.  Click here to learn more.  This work is 46″ x 35″  and costs $3,800 without a frame.  It is untitled but is from her “Weather Series.”  I saw more of the series on her website and liked them all.  I took the first photo at the exhibition and the other two photos are from her website.

In this next piece by Andrea, I don’t know her inspiration but it makes me think of a tornado.

In this work, the umbrella shapes steal the show.

Visiting Da Gallery was an “I love New York” moment.  There is always something new and interesting in my home town.  I only touched on a few artists currently being shown.  The space is large at 1500 square feet.  The “Colored Glasses” exhibition runs until April 16.  Try to stop by.
